About the Location
North & South: A Tale of Two Park Sections
Tucked away at the corner of Bethany Home Road and 59th Avenue, Bonsall Park covers 10 acres divided into two distinct sections. The park is neatly split into two distinct areas: Bonsall Park North and Bonsall Park South, each with its own personality and offerings.
If you're visiting the northern section, you can't miss the F-100D Super Sabre Air Force jet sitting proudly in the center - it's quite the conversation starter! This part of the park is where sports enthusiasts gather, with courts and play areas aplenty.
Cast a Line at the Lake
Wander over to Bonsall Park South and you'll discover a peaceful fishing lake spanning about 2 acres. With waters reaching depths of 10 feet, the lake is home to a variety of fish - catfish, trout, bass, sunfish, and white amur all swim beneath the surface.
The lake gets regularly stocked according to seasonal schedules, which keeps local fishing enthusiasts coming back. On any given day, you might spot ducks and geese gliding across the water, adding a touch of natural serenity to your visit.
A Bit of Local Lore
For over 40 years, this park has been bringing Glendale residents together. Interestingly, many locals know it by a quirky nickname - "Chicken Park" - a moniker that's stuck around through the decades.
The mix of recreational facilities and natural spaces provides options for various outdoor activities and community gatherings.
What You Can Do Here
Bonsall Park offers plenty of ways to spend your time. Spread out a picnic blanket under the shade of large trees, or watch the kids burn off energy at the playground equipment in the northern section across Bethany Home Road. If you're feeling active, check out the various courts and fields, including the increasingly popular pickleball courts.
The park occasionally hosts community events too, including fishing programs where they sometimes provide equipment alongside fun activities like raffles and refreshments.
Good to Know Before You Go
While there's lots to enjoy here, note that certain activities aren't allowed: no swimming or wading in the lake, no glass containers, and of course, no littering. If you're planning to bring alcoholic beverages, you'll need to secure a permit first.
Operating hours are posted on signs around the park, so be sure to check the current times for your visit.
