About the Location
A Touch of Tempe History
Since 1949, Clark Park has provided the Tempe community with 10 acres of green space. During the pandemic, this longstanding neighborhood fixture got a much-needed refresh, breathing new energy into its well-worn paths and facilities.
The park carries the legacy of Ken Clark, a Texas transplant born in Abilene in 1907, who made Tempe his home. Clark left his mark on the city through his dedication to public service, including a stint on the Tempe City Council from 1943-46. Today, his family name lives on in this vibrant community space.
Cool Off & Connect
At the heart of Clark Park sits a newly renovated community center and pool complex that's popular during summer months. The pool area features a gentle zero-depth entry (perfect for little ones), an exhilarating 17-foot spiral water slide, five dedicated lap lanes, and plenty of shade structures to escape the relentless Arizona sun. The outdoor 25-yard swimming pool is especially appreciated during those triple-digit temperature days.
Baseball fans will appreciate the Matt Mantei Little League Ballfield, dedicated back in 2003 as part of the "Field of Dreams" program. This collaboration between Diamondbacks Charities and APS upgraded the field with proper lighting, fencing, backstops, and an electronic scoreboard that gives young players the big-league experience.
Playground Paradise
The recently updated playgrounds at Clark Park are thoughtfully split into age-appropriate zones: one area for the ages 2-5 crowd and another for ages 5-12 kids. The renovation added creative elements to these play areas that set them apart from others in Tempe.
You'll find all the essentials here: safe slides, engaging tunnels, interactive musical instruments, and accessible swings. The playgrounds are well-maintained and properly lit in the evenings, creating a secure environment where families can let their kids burn off energy without worry.
Pup-Friendly Space
For dog owners: Clark Park features a spacious dog park dotted with shade trees and picnic areas where your four-legged friends can socialize. While dogs must be leashed throughout most of the park, this designated area gives them freedom to run and play. You'll discover dog waste bags stationed throughout - a thoughtful touch that helps keep the area clean.
The dog park has become something of a community hub, with regular visitors who come to let their pets play while they catch up with neighbors. There's plenty of seating for humans to relax while the dogs do their thing.
Growing Community
One of the park's standout features is its thriving community garden, where local green thumbs cultivate everything from herbs to vegetables. Beyond growing food, the garden has become a place where neighbors connect. Some generous gardeners even share their harvest with passersby - a small but meaningful gesture that captures the park's community spirit.
Recently upgraded, the garden adds another dimension to Clark Park's identity as a versatile community resource.
Beyond the Basics
Clark Park also offers additional amenities. You'll also find basketball courts, volleyball courts, and horseshoe pits scattered around the grounds. The BBQ grills make this an ideal spot for impromptu cookouts or planned family gatherings.
Comfortable shaded seating areas and picnic tables dot the landscape, with a concentration near the horseshoe field. A walking path loops around the perimeter, great for morning jogs or evening strolls as the desert heat subsides.
Neighborhood Nexus
More than just a park, this green space is headquarters for several neighborhood associations and hosts a popular farmers market on Saturdays. The open areas provide ample room for everything from casual frisbee games to organized community events.
While parking can be limited during busy times, the park's clean grounds, security presence, and diverse offerings make it a valued neighborhood space.
