About the Location
History and Dedication
Pacific Park got a meaningful makeover in 2010 when it was renamed Larry L. Maxam Memorial Park. The new name honors Lance Corporal Larry L. Maxam, a local hero and Medal of Honor recipient who lost his life during the Vietnam War. Though the park has been around since 1952, this dedication gave it a deeper connection to the Burbank community, preserving the memory of Corporal Maxam's brave service for generations to come.
Facilities and Recreation
This neighborhood green space offers various recreational options. Pickleball enthusiasts will find four well-lit courts that have replaced the former tennis facilities. These courts tend to draw quite a crowd of enthusiastic players, especially in the evenings when the lights come on.
If basketball or baseball is more your style, you'll come across a full court and baseball field ready for your next pickup game or practice session. The variety of sports options makes this a versatile spot for active recreation throughout the week.
Playground and Picnic Areas
Got kids? The park features two distinct play zones - a toddler area complete with baby swings for the little ones, and a more challenging climbing structure that keeps older children entertained. Just note that the playground has sand surfaces rather than foam padding.
There are numerous picnic tables scattered around the grounds for meals and gatherings. Many provide shade - particularly appreciated on hot California days. If you're planning a cookout, the grilling areas can accommodate your BBQ plans, but you might need to secure a permit from the Burbank Parks and Recreation Department first.
Landscape and Atmosphere
Generous stretches of green lawn and mature trees define the landscape here, creating plenty of space for frisbee tossing, casual soccer, or just sprawling out with a good book. The larger grassy area toward the back of the park is particularly spacious for impromptu games.
One unique quirk about this park is its proximity to Burbank Airport. Visitors can catch glimpses of planes taking off and landing, which can be pretty fascinating to watch. The trade-off is some occasional aircraft noise and sometimes a hint of jet fuel in the air - just part of the local character.
Amenities
Visitors will be pleased to find clean, recently upgraded restrooms that are well-stocked and maintained - always a plus for longer park visits with family.
Dog owners can bring their four-legged friends along, but do keep them leashed at all times. Most visitors are good about cleaning up after their pets, helping to keep the grounds pleasant for everyone.
Accessibility
The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM until 10:32PM (yes, that oddly specific closing time is correct). Its residential setting makes it a natural gathering spot for nearby families.
No need to stress about parking - there's dedicated on-site parking plus plenty of street spaces available nearby, making it easy to visit whether you're from the neighborhood or driving in from elsewhere in Burbank.
