About the Location
A Historic Space in Elk Grove
Found in the heart of Elk Grove is a 122-acre sanctuary that's been bringing locals together since the late 1800s. This historic park has deep roots in the community. Back in the early 1900s, residents actually pooled their money together to buy this land and save its magnificent oak trees. Pretty cool origin story, right?
The Lake: Where Serenity Meets Fun
At the heart of the park is a 7.5-acre lake that adds to the park's charm. There's Strauss Island rising from the waters, and a smaller island featuring a pirate-themed play structure that's popular with children. A gentle 1.4-mile multi-use trail meanders around the lake and through those stately oak groves, great for your morning jog or a leisurely afternoon stroll.
The lake hosts a community of ducks and geese that add to the peaceful vibe. You can try your luck fishing here too, though the catch varies depending on when you visit.
Recreation for Everyone
Looking to get active? The park has baseball and softball fields, soccer fields, and sand volleyball courts for team sports enthusiasts. Frisbee fans will appreciate the beginner-friendly 9-hole disc golf course. If swimming is more your thing, head over to the Jerry Fox Swim Center.
The little ones have multiple playgrounds scattered within the grounds to burn off energy. Cyclists can test their skills at the bike park with its dirt trails and jump features. And yes, your four-legged friend gets to have fun too in the spacious dog park where they can run free safely.
Perfect for Gatherings
Whether it's a family reunion or just a weekend cookout, the park's 17 reservable picnic areas offer tables and BBQ grills. Most spots enjoy generous shade from those gorgeous oak trees that define the park's character. Planning something bigger? The Pavilion or Strauss Island can be rented for larger celebrations.
Where Community Happens
The park hosts several annual events, including Fourth of July celebrations, the Giant Pumpkin Festival, the Strauss Festival, and various cultural celebrations throughout the year.
Hidden Treasures
Take a moment at the Veterans Memorial to reflect and honor those who served. History buffs might want to check out the Elk Grove Heritage Museum within the park grounds - it typically opens its doors on the first Saturday of each month.
The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 9PM. During hot summer days, the mature tree canopy provides welcome shade throughout much of the park.
