About the Location

History and Location

Found in Oakland's vibrant Chinatown neighborhood, Chinese Garden Park is a small urban oasis bordered by 7th Street, Harrison Street, 6th Street, and Alice Street. Though modest in size, this space has a rich history - it was originally called Harrison Square when Oakland was first mapped out, then took on the name Harrison Railroad Park from 1967 until the 1990s before becoming what we know today.

Design and Architecture

What makes this park special is its traditional Chinese architectural elements. At its heart stands the Hall of Pioneers, designed by Henry Chang Jr. - not just an architect but also a former Oakland City Councilmember. These days, the hall is part of the Lake Merritt Child Care Center, having previously housed one branch of Family Bridges' Hong Lok Senior Center.

The gazebo-like structure near the sidewalk corner provides a nice spot for taking a breather in the shade while watching the neighborhood activity. The park has seen some renovation work in recent years, helping preserve both its cultural character and everyday functionality.

Community Use

Early birds visiting Chinatown might notice something special - Chinese Garden Park comes alive in the mornings with locals practicing Tai Chi, their graceful movements adding to the peaceful atmosphere. It's a little pocket of calm amid the energy of Chinatown, where you can take a moment to relax and connect with Oakland's cultural heritage.

Despite not being the largest green space in the city, the park is a welcome spot to soak up some sunshine, catch your breath during a Chinatown exploration, or simply appreciate this cultural landmark.

Park Features

Space is at a premium here, with buildings and fenced areas taking up much of the park. The park hosts cultural programs that often focus on younger community members.

There's an open grassy area that works well for casual gatherings, although like any urban park, the landscape shifts with the seasons. Note that you won't find public restrooms within the park grounds, so plan accordingly for your visit.

Current Condition

Like many urban parks, Chinese Garden Park faces the ongoing challenge of maintenance. Its condition can fluctuate all year long, with some areas showing the natural wear and tear of a well-used community space. The park receives periodic maintenance and renovation as part of Oakland's efforts to preserve this meaningful cultural asset.
