About the Location

Waterfront Recreation

Located in San Mateo, California, Parkside Aquatic Park sits alongside the Marina Lagoon, offering a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. As the home of the city's only boating launch ramp, this compact park combines water activities with traditional park features in a way that feels both refreshing and familiar.

What we really like about this park is the serene atmosphere alongside its amenities, creating a peaceful place to spend time with family and friends.

Beach and Swimming Area

The sandy beach area along the lagoon offers a nice alternative for those who want to feel the sand between their toes without making the trek to the ocean. There's a roped-off swim area that's ideal for a cool dip, but you should note there's no lifeguard on duty, so keep an eye on the little ones.

One of the best things about swimming here is the calm water - no waves to worry about, making it a good spot for kids and less confident swimmers. Just be aware that water quality can change, and occasionally there are warning signs posted. When that happens, it's best to stay dry and enjoy the park's other offerings instead.

Secluded Setting

Tucked away behind residential homes, this park has a secluded feel to it. Many first-time visitors are surprised to discover such a tranquil spot in the middle of a neighborhood. It's this secluded nature that makes it excellent for peaceful picnics, lazy sunbathing sessions, or quiet bird watching afternoons.

The lagoon attracts an impressive variety of shore and sea birds - a treat for nature enthusiasts or anyone who appreciates wildlife. In May and June, you'll likely spot geese nesting and raising their young. It's charming to watch, but it does mean you might encounter some droppings around the park during these months.

Water Sports

If you want to get active on the water, there are several options available. The park is a local favorite for boating, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. From May through September, weekend visitors can rent small boats and paddleboards to explore the lagoon at their leisure.

A tip from the regulars: if you're planning to paddle out, aim for a morning session before noon. The winds typically pick up in the afternoon, making for choppier conditions. The exceptionally calm morning waters are great for beginners or anyone who prefers a gentle paddling experience.

Playgrounds

Families with kids will appreciate the two distinct playground areas that cater to different age groups. The red playground set on sand is ideal for children ages 2-5, offering age-appropriate challenges and fun.

For the really little ones, the playground on turf is better suited for toddlers under 2. Just a heads up - that turf can get pretty warm on hot days due to limited shade. It's most comfortable when temperatures stay below 80 degrees, so plan your visit accordingly if you have tiny explorers in tow.

Picnic and BBQ Areas

Nothing complements a day by the water like good food and good company. The park's designated picnic areas come equipped with tables and barbecue grills, making it easy to extend your stay through mealtime. If you're planning a weekend gathering, you might want to arrive early - the limited number of picnic tables can get claimed quickly on busy days.

Beyond the designated picnic spots, there are plenty of open grassy areas where you can spread out a blanket and enjoy lunch with a view. The combination of water vistas and dining facilities makes this spot particularly popular for birthday celebrations and family get-togethers.

Additional Amenities

The practical stuff matters too, and Parkside doesn't disappoint. You'll come across clean restroom facilities at both ends of the park, with baby changing tables available in some locations - a thoughtful touch for families with infants.

Free parking is available in the park's lot, however it tends to fill quickly on weekends and holidays. The park welcomes visitors daily from 7AM to 10PM, giving you plenty of time to enjoy all it has to offer. Dogs are welcome too, as long as you clean up after your furry friends.

With its mix of aquatic adventures and traditional park features, Parkside Aquatic Park offers something for almost everyone. It's the kind of place where you can spend an entire day moving between activities or simply sitting still, watching the water and letting time slip peacefully by.
