About the Location
Historic Origins
Found in Tallahassee, Florida lies the charming 6-acre Dorothy B. Oven Park. This peaceful retreat was once part of the Lafayette Land Grant - a gift from Congress to General Marquis de Lafayette back in 1824.
By the 1930s, the land had transformed into the Camellia Nursery, run by Breckenridge Gamble, who was among Florida's pioneer camellia cultivators. Those early gardening efforts set the stage for what the park would eventually become.
Manor House
At the heart of the park stands an elegant manor-style house from 1936, designed by the talented Alfred Maclay. Step inside and you'll discover yourself surrounded by rare magnolia paneling, beautiful wooden floors, and carefully preserved antique furniture and artwork. It's like stepping back in time.
The park owes its existence to Will J. Oven, Jr., who donated the property to Tallahassee in 1985. His only request? That it be developed as a city park while maintaining the area's original character and charm.
Gardens and Landscape
The true stars of Dorothy B. Oven Park are its lush North Florida gardens. Wander the grounds and you'll encounter vibrant azaleas, stunning camellias, swaying palms, and numerous native plants. The camellias here are particularly notable, with some varieties dating back to the property's days as a nursery.
The park features gentle walking trails that invite you to explore at your own pace. Scattered throughout are water features including a natural pond and several fountains that not only create a peaceful atmosphere but also provide homes for local wildlife.
Amenities and Features
You'll come across plenty of picnic tables around the grounds, well-suited for an afternoon lunch or morning coffee. There are also comfortable benches if you just want to sit, reflect, or lose yourself in a good book. For your convenience, clean restrooms and water fountains are readily available.
Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the numerous picture-perfect spots throughout the park. The combination of beautiful gardens and architectural elements creates an ideal backdrop for family photos, engagement pictures, or celebrating special moments.
Events and Gatherings
It's no surprise that Dorothy B. Oven Park has become a go-to venue for weddings, graduations, baby showers, and other celebrations. You can rent the Carriage House and grounds for private events, with staff on hand to help with arrangements.
No matter if you're planning an intimate gathering or a larger celebration, the tranquil environment and beautiful scenery provide a fantastic setting.
Seasonal Highlights
During the holidays, the park is decorated with over 250,000 twinkling lights, festive displays, and holiday music. This Christmas light display has become a tradition for many Tallahassee families.
You can choose to drive through or walk among the illuminated gardens, with the latter offering a more immersive experience. If you're visiting with kids (or are just young at heart), Elf Night features costumed characters, cookies, and hot chocolate.
