About the Location
A Neighborhood Escape Since 1914
Located in Chicago's Hermosa neighborhood, Kelvyn Park has been a local green oasis since 1914. Originally created by the Northwest Park District to give the growing middle-class community some much-needed breathing room, it later joined the Chicago Park District family in 1934.
At the center of the park is a two-story brick fieldhouse designed in 1928 by architect Walter W. Ahlschlager. This historic building contains a fitness center, gymnasium, auditorium, and meeting spaces that are regularly used by the community. When the fieldhouse is open, you'll also have access to bathrooms and drinking fountains - always good to know before planning a visit!
Room to Play and Move
Covering nearly 10 acres, the park's landscaped grounds give you plenty of space to stretch your legs. Mature shade trees frame walking paths excellent for a casual stroll or morning jog. Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the two baseball fields, a football/soccer field, basketball courts, volleyball courts, and two tennis courts.
Inside the fieldhouse, there's a modest but functional fitness center with all the essential equipment you need for a good workout. It might not be enormous, but it gets the job done when outdoor exercise isn't an option.
Kid-Friendly Spaces
Got little ones? The playground is a hit with families, featuring swings, slides, climbing equipment, and monkey bars suitable for various ages. The wood chip surface adds a bit of cushion for those inevitable tumbles, and the playground's location next to the fieldhouse makes it easy to duck inside if needed.
During Chicago's sweltering summer months, the water spray feature becomes the playground's main attraction, offering a refreshing escape from the heat. Parents can relax on shaded benches nearby while keeping an eye on splashing kiddos.
Where Community Happens
Kelvyn Park functions as a neighborhood center, with programs that bring people together throughout the year. Kids can join after-school programs and seasonal camps, while adults might drop in for fitness classes to stay active.
On weekends, the open areas transform into gathering spots for cookouts and family reunions. If you're lucky, you might catch local vendors near the Drummond entrance selling elotes (that delicious Mexican street corn) and frozen treats - a great finish to a day at the park.
Located near Kelvyn Park High School and surrounded by residential streets, this green space is an important part of daily life for many in the Hermosa community.
