About the Location
A Brief History
Found in Chicago's Morgan Park Community Area, Ada Park spans a generous 16.65 acres of green space. Born in 1930, this park was created for the neighborhood's growing African-American community.
The park didn't appear overnight - it evolved gradually, with the final pieces of land being acquired in 1955. By 1957, nearby streets and alleys were incorporated to give us the park we know today.
Originally called Loomis Street Park, it was renamed in 1934 by the Calumet Park District. Its namesake? Ada Sawyer Garrett (1856-1938), a woman who left her mark on Chicago's urban landscape. Garrett sold a baseball park in Logan Square, paving the way for development that would ultimately shape that neighborhood's character.
What You'll Find There
Over the decades, Ada Park has continuously evolved. By 1931, visitors could already enjoy a swimming pool alongside some initial landscaping work.
When the Chicago Park District took over in 1934, they added more recreational amenities. The bathhouse for swimmers came along in 1940, with the fieldhouse expanding in both 1957 and 1990.
Things to Do
Today, Ada Park offers a variety of activities for different interests. You'll come across a mix of indoor and outdoor facilities hosting various programs - from seasonal sports to tumbling classes, and clubs for both teens and seniors.
During the school year, kids can participate in after-school programs, while summers bring a popular six-week day camp that local families look forward to. Throughout the year, the park hosts special events, including family-friendly holiday celebrations.
The park's advisory council meets four times a year, with community members contributing to park decisions.
