About the Location
Historic Roots
Situated in the heart of the Holy Cross neighborhood in Indianapolis, Highland Park spreads across 4.09 acres of rolling, partially shaded terrain. As one of the city's oldest parks, this serene location sits at the second highest elevation in Indianapolis, rewarding you with breathtaking views of the downtown skyline. Standing in this historic space offers panoramic vistas that have attracted Indy residents for generations. Photographers often flock here, cameras in hand, hoping to capture that perfect shot of the city from this unique vantage point.
Noble Family Legacy
The land beneath your feet at Highland Park carries quite the story. Once part of "Highland Home," the grand estate of Governor Noah Noble and his family, this elevated patch of greenery transitioned to public use in 1898. When the last Noble family member sold the property to the city, they did so with one condition: tear down the estate and transform the land into a park for everyone to enjoy. In a thoughtful nod to sustainability before it was trendy, the bricks from the demolished estate found new life elsewhere in the city, while the land began its journey as the beloved neighborhood retreat we know today.
Community Gathering Space
Highland Park has evolved into a natural meeting point for the community. Its open lawns and shady spots create a fantastic backdrop for everything from quiet afternoon reading to lively family gatherings. The Fourth of July brings a special energy to the park, as locals spread out blankets and picnic baskets to watch fireworks illuminate the Indianapolis skyline. Art has found its place here too, with the recent installation of Stele, a sculpture honoring Kelly Wensing's contributions to the neighborhood - a fitting tribute in a space that's all about community connection.
Park Features
You'll discover plenty to enjoy during your visit to Highland Park. Kids gravitate toward the playground with its swings and slides, while the substantial covered pavilion-gazebo offers shelter for gatherings rain or shine. The gently rolling terrain and concrete paths invite you to stretch your legs, whether you're looking for a casual stroll or something more invigorating. Dog owners particularly appreciate the park's open spaces - it's a popular spot for four-legged friends to get some exercise while their humans soak in the scenery.
Scenic Views
The standout feature of Highland Park is the impressive view of the Indianapolis skyline. There's hardly a better spot in the city to watch the sun sink below the horizon, painting the downtown buildings in golden light. You'll often see people with cameras trying to frame a fantastic shot, or couples spreading blankets across the grassy hillside on warm evenings. It's a good spot for a quiet moment of reflection or a romantic setting, thanks to its elevated position.
Note that while Highland Park offers beautiful scenery and recreational space, you won't find public restrooms or water fountains here. Street parking is available around the perimeter, however it can fill up quickly during popular times.
