About the Location
Park Overview
Positioned in Wichita, Kansas, O.J. Watson Park covers 119 acres with a history dating back to 1965. What began as four sand pits has grown into one of the city's largest green spaces, with a 40-acre lake at its center where you can fish, kayak, or take a pedal boat ride. Just remember to bring your Kansas Fishing License if you're planning to cast a line - and don't worry about bait, as it's usually available for purchase during most of the year.
Recreation Facilities
Kids have plenty of room to burn energy here with several playgrounds scattered across the grounds. Safety-conscious parents will appreciate the rubber-surfaced playground, while the sand-surfaced playgrounds offer that classic tactile play experience many visitors remember from childhood. The littlest visitors aren't forgotten either, with toddler-friendly equipment including saucer swings that are well-suited for the younger crowd.
Looking for some family fun? The park offers several ticketed attractions. Hop aboard the charming miniature train ride for a scenic tour around the park - it's a hit with kids and nostalgic adults alike. During spring and summer (weather permitting), pony rides give children a gentle introduction to horseback riding. Challenge your putting skills at the 18-hole miniature golf course - just be prepared for the occasional leaf or twig that comes with playing in the great outdoors. If you're feeling more active, the sand volleyball courts are ready for your next spike.
For a casual stroll, follow the winding paths including the whimsical Yellow Brick Road pathway (we're in Kansas, after all). When it's time to eat, numerous picnic areas with tables and charcoal grills are available for anything from a simple lunch to a family gathering.
Special Features
The park features a campfire circle and seasonal hayrack rides. During the holidays, Watson's Christmas Express transforms the park into a winter wonderland, complete with Santa visits, steaming cups of hot chocolate, and s'mores roasted over a bonfire. Halloween brings its own spooky charm with haunted events that draw thrill-seekers from across the region.
If you're cycling the Arkansas River Bicycle Path, the park makes for an excellent rest stop or destination. Nature enthusiasts might spot blue herons and other local birds around the lake - bring your binoculars for some impromptu birdwatching.
Amenities and Facilities
The park comes well-equipped for your needs with both open shelters for drop-in use and reservable covered picnic areas for planned gatherings. Planning something special? The newer event venue building offers an air-conditioned indoor space meant for weddings, celebrations, or meetings.
When you need a snack, the concession stand offers refreshments including hot dogs and pretzels. Restrooms are available throughout the park, however quality can vary depending on when you visit. You'll find ample paved parking that makes visits hassle-free, whether you're stopping by for a quick afternoon adventure or settling in for a day-long celebration.
You can purchase tickets for the train, pony rides, and paddle boats individually at the ticket stand, or save a few dollars with their discounted packages.
