About the Location

Historic Origins

Found in Boston's South End neighborhood, Blackstone Square is a charming historic park with quite the backstory. Spanning 2.44 acres, it actually started as half of a larger vision called Columbia Square. Plans changed though, and the area was split into two - giving us Blackstone and its sister park, Franklin Square. The renowned architect Charles Bulfinch put his creative touch on these green spaces, with Blackstone officially welcoming visitors in 1855, fashionably late compared to Franklin Square which had opened six years earlier.

Design and Features

A classic wrought iron fence hugs the perimeter of Blackstone Square, with welcoming entrances at each corner and along Pembroke Street and Shawmut Avenue. At the heart of the park sits a decorative fountain adorned with sea-inspired sculptures that adds a touch of artistry to the space. The pathways that cross through the square are lined with elegant Silver Linden trees, creating peaceful corridors for your strolls.

Need a spot to unwind? The park offers plenty of shaded areas and open grassy spaces fantastic for everything from quiet contemplation to picnics and community gatherings. The border of the square features handsome Sugar Maples that add splashes of color throughout the seasons.

You can find benches scattered throughout the grounds, inviting you to take a moment to sit and soak in the atmosphere. With its historical character and convenient location near other South End highlights, it's no wonder this green oasis has become a local retreat.

Preservation and Accessibility

As part of the South End Landmark District, Blackstone Square has seen thoughtful revitalization over the years to maintain both its historic charm and practical usefulness. Getting here is a breeze thanks to nearby public transit options - the MBTA Silver Line stops close by, and several bus routes serve the area, making this peaceful pocket of history accessible to both locals and city explorers.
