About the Location
A Slice of Detroit's Past & Present
Tucked just east of Campus Martius Park in downtown Detroit, Cadillac Square Park is where history and modern urban life come together in perfect harmony. This wasn't always a park though - from 1841 to 1891, farmers sold their goods at Detroit's Farmer's Market right here, and in the 1960s, buses passed through what was then a transfer station.
Re-established in summer 2007, the park now adds greenery to the downtown area, next to neighboring Campus Martius Park. At its heart stands the Bagley Memorial Fountain, a beautiful historical monument relocated from Campus Martius that gives the space its distinctive character.
Fun & Games for Everyone
During weekday lunch hours, you'll find downtown workers unwinding with a game of pétanque - a French bowling game that's become something of a midday tradition here from noon to 1 p.m. If that's not your style, perhaps bocce, its Italian cousin, might be more your speed.
When winter rolls around, don't hibernate at home - head to the Cadillac Lodge instead. This heated pop-up tent offers family-friendly games, comfortable seating, and seasonal drinks. The twinkling lights and warm décor create a nice winter atmosphere.
Holiday Magic
The winter holiday season brings Cadillac Square to life in a special way. The park hosts charming Christmas markets where local vendors and artisans rotate through, offering handcrafted treasures and artwork. You can buy directly from creators while enjoying the festive atmosphere.
Fuel your shopping expedition with treats from food stalls (the waffle spot is particularly good) or warm up with hot chocolate as you take in the scene. And if you need a moment's break, you can glimpse the fountain at Campus Martius while resting your shopping bags.
A Community Hub
Beautiful perennial gardens and open seating areas make Cadillac Square a peaceful retreat amid downtown's energy. The park is well-maintained, with benches, chairs, and tables where you can relax, work, or chat with friends.
Year-round, you'll encounter food truck rallies, weekly markets, and community events that bring people together. Kids have room to play while adults enjoy the blend of historical significance and modern amenities. These elements combine to make the park an essential thread in downtown Detroit's social fabric.
What You'll Find
You won't struggle to find a place to sit with the abundance of tables and benches throughout the square. On scorching summer days, you'll appreciate the shade options, and there's shelter available when the weather turns.
Dog owners, rejoice - your four-legged friends are welcome in this public space. And while you're there, be sure to find one of those perfect vantage points where you can admire the Campus Martius fountain in the distance.
