About the Location

A Piece of St. Louis History

Found in the urban landscape of St. Louis is Sublette Park, a 13.52-acre triangular green space with a story to tell. Once known as Manchester Park, it was renamed in 1925 to honor William L. and Solomon B. Sublette, a pair of western fur traders who once owned land in this area. What's particularly interesting is that before becoming a park in 1915, this land served as the site of the old female hospital dating back to the 1870s.

Where the Hill Meets the Sky

Sitting near the cherished Hill neighborhood, Sublette Park is neatly bordered by Southwest Avenue, Sublette Avenue, and Arsenal Avenue. Local legend has it that you might be standing on one of the highest points in the entire city when you visit. The park's unique triangular shape makes the most of urban green space - a little geometric retreat in the city grid. If you happen to visit on a clear winter day, look out for a distant view of the Arch peeking through the cityscape.

Play, Splash, Repeat

This neighborhood park is a go-to spot for all kinds of outdoor fun. If you're up for a game on the multi-purpose fields (perfect for softball, baseball, or soccer) or a match on the tennis courts, there's room to play.

For the little ones, there's a playground with swings and slides featuring soft, toddler-friendly ground material that helps prevent injuries. On those sweltering St. Louis summer days, the splash fountain provides relief, placed in a shaded area where both kids and parents can catch a break from the heat.

Natural Retreats & Gathering Spaces

The park has a nice balance of landscapes - a multi-purpose utility building and clubhouse sit on a wooded hill, while the flatter terrain houses the sports fields. Well-maintained paved paths circle the perimeter and cut through the park, well-suited for your morning jog or evening stroll.

Ecologically minded visitors will appreciate the small monarch butterfly garden, doing its part for local pollinators. Throughout the park, you'll discover a pavilion and scattered picnic tables, ready for your family lunch or a quiet afternoon with a book.

A Neighborhood Favorite

Despite being surrounded by city life, Sublette Park offers a refreshing dose of greenery and community spirit. You'll often spot dog walkers making good use of the open spaces and network of paths.

During the year, the park comes alive with special events - keep an eye out for the fireworks displays, which many locals consider among the best in St. Louis. With well-kept grounds and clean facilities, this park manages to be both practical and charming - a true neighborhood retreat for visitors of all ages.
