About the Location
Park History
Lazy 5 Regional Park spans 85 acres in Sparks, Nevada, with a name that has a bit of local charm behind it - it comes from a former ranch in the area that used a brand resembling a sideways '5'.
This land was home to Harold's Trapshooting Club from 1950 to 1979. It wasn't just any shooting range - it was considered one of the largest trapshooting clubs in the country and hosted major Amateur Trapshooting Association tournaments. An interesting history for what's now a local park.
Development and Expansion
The park as we know it began taking shape in 2001, when the upper area opened with its community center, water park, playground, and skate park. Six years later, the park expanded to include hiking trails that wind through all 85 acres of Washoe County land.
More recently, in early 2019, The Hive was added, replacing a sand and salt dome next to the skateparks and bringing new life to that section of the grounds.
Recreational Facilities
Lazy 5 offers plenty of space to spread out and enjoy yourself. With expansive grassy areas, picnic spots, and soccer fields, there's room for whatever outdoor activity strikes your fancy.
The Melio Gaspari Water Play Park is a popular splash zone that offers relief during hot summer months. There is a small $4 per person fee to enjoy the water features, but it's worth it when the temperatures climb.
The park thoughtfully provides two separate playground areas catering to different age groups - one for the little ones and another for older children. Both feature soft flooring tiles instead of wood chips, with slides and various play equipment.
Sports and Recreation
Positioned in the back of the park, the skate park has developed quite the reputation among local skaters. With varying difficulty levels and what many describe as good flow, it's welcoming to both newbies and those with more tricks up their sleeves.
If you're into more traditional outdoor games, you'll appreciate the horseshoe pits and volleyball courts scattered around the grounds.
Dog owners can use the large open grassy areas where dogs can run and play. Just keep in mind that these areas aren't fenced, so you'll want to keep an eye on your pup.
Amenities
No need to stress about basic necessities here. You can find clean indoor restrooms with all the essentials - running water and soap included. The park offers multiple picnic areas, from covered pavilions with tables to more casual spots under the shade of trees.
Planning a cookout? BBQ grills are available around the park, making it easy to grill up some burgers while the kids play. For bigger gatherings, you can reserve the clubhouse in advance.
A cool perk is the regional library connected to the park - well-suited for cooling off on a scorching day or grabbing a book to read under a tree.
Community Events
Lazy 5 really comes alive during its summer concert series. These free shows happen Wednesday evenings at 6 PM throughout summer, featuring local bands, food trucks, and a mobile pub. The atmosphere is relaxed and festive - exactly what you want for a midweek break.
Many locals bring blankets, spread out on the grass, and make an evening of it. If you're planning to attend, arriving early is a smart move since parking can fill up fast when events are happening.
Year-round, you'll also find seasonal celebrations like Easter egg hunts and various community gatherings that bring neighbors together in this spacious outdoor setting.
