About the Location
History and Location
Tucked away in Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood, South Oxford Park is a little lush escape that's been giving locals a place to breathe since 2006. Built on what used to be the South Oxford Tennis Club (a bit of Brooklyn history right there!), this modest park has become a neighborhood favorite for anyone needing a moment of calm in the city chaos.
It's not huge, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in community spirit - a place where both families and solo visitors can find their own little slice of urban peace.
Recreational Facilities
The heart of the park features a versatile synthetic turf lawn where you can do pretty much anything from impromptu picnics to casual frisbee games. Tennis players, you're in luck - there are two hardtop courts available (one for singles, one for doubles) working on a simple sign-up system so everyone gets their turn.
Just a heads-up about those tennis balls that inevitably fly over the fence - there are some guidelines about retrieving them to keep the peace with the neighbors. The turf area has also become something of an unofficial soccer spot for locals looking to kick a ball around after work or on weekends.
Children's Amenities
The playground here is a definite highlight, with accessible equipment that makes sure kids of all abilities can join in the fun. On hot summer days, the cattail-themed spray shower becomes the park's main attraction, with children darting through the water sprays amid squeals and laughter.
You'll generally find the playground clean and well-kept, making it a go-to for neighborhood families. One thing to note, but - there aren't any public restrooms in the park, which can be a bit challenging when you've got little ones in tow.
Natural Environment
The surrounding gardens give South Oxford Park a peaceful vibe that's hard to find in the city. With its decorative flower beds adding splashes of color through the seasons, it's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think.
Despite being compact compared to some of Brooklyn's larger green spaces, it's become a treasured spot for Fort Greene residents. The large flat rocks scattered throughout make for perfect natural seating - ideal for reading a book, having a coffee, or just watching the world go by.
