About the Location

History and Renaming

Positioned in the Bronx, not far from the iconic Yankee Stadium, sits Reverend T. Wendell Foster Park. You'll discover this community green space at the corner of East 164th Street and River Avenue.

If you've been in the neighborhood for a while, you might remember when it was called Mullaly Park - the name change only happened in 2021. The park now honors Reverend T. Wendell Foster, a pioneering civil rights advocate who made history as the first Black elected city official in the Bronx. That said, plenty of locals still use the old name when giving directions.

Park Origins

The park's story begins back in 1924 when New York City acquired the land. It was developed as a recreational space to complement nearby Macombs Dam Park.

Over the decades, this modest park has grown and evolved alongside its community.

Recent Improvements

The park has gotten some serious TLC in recent years. 2021 brought renovations to the recreation center, including a fresh indoor basketball court, a new dance room, and an updated library.

Skate enthusiasts take note - this park houses some of the largest ramps in NYC's park system. Since becoming an official skate park in 1988, it's been drawing skateboarders, rollerbladers, and BMX riders from across the city.

Facilities and Location

The park includes a variety of facilities. There are playgrounds designed for different age groups, sports fields for the athletically inclined, and peaceful open spaces for those just looking to relax.

Its location near Yankee Stadium makes it a natural gathering spot. On game days, there's an extra buzz of energy as fans congregate before heading to watch the Bronx Bombers play.

Recreation Areas

Bring your glove and bat - the baseball fields here see action throughout the week with kids of all ages practicing their swings. Basketball enthusiasts can shoot hoops at the multiple basketball courts.

Soccer players will appreciate the soccer fields where organizations like South Bronx United regularly host matches. If tennis or swimming is more your speed, you'll find tennis courts and a swimming pool to enjoy as well.

Open Space and Atmosphere

Need a breather from city life? The park offers plenty of room to spread out a blanket and unwind. You can choose between sunny spots and shaded areas depending on your mood.

One of the park's hidden perks is its pleasant breeze and views of the surrounding area, including glimpses of Yankee Stadium. Thanks to good drainage, the grounds stay usable even after a downpour - a rarity for city parks.

Dog-Friendly Areas

Dog owners, you're welcome here. The park provides safe, open spaces where your four-legged friends can stretch their legs and socialize.

It's become something of a canine community hub, with regulars meeting up for impromptu doggy playdates throughout the week.

Community Events

The park functions as a community gathering space. From food festivals to cultural celebrations and family activities, there's often something happening here. When the weather warms up, local schools frequently use the space for field days.

Vegan food festivals and other special events bring neighbors together, creating community bonds even when the weather doesn't fully cooperate.

Future Development

Exciting changes are on the horizon. In 2024, local officials announced a $4 million investment to renovate park facilities, with special attention going to the skate park area.

This funding aims to upgrade facilities while maintaining the park's character and recreational offerings.
