About the Location

A Natural Haven in the City

Located next to the banks of the Red River where it meets Rose Creek, Fargo Lions Conservancy Park offers 45 acres of natural escape from city life. The wooded trails meander through diverse habitats, fantastic for when you need a quick nature fix or want to spot some local wildlife. Think massive trees, lush plant life, serene ponds, and those peaceful river views that make you forget you're still in Fargo.

Since 2018, the park has been undergoing a transformation as part of the Urban Woods and Prairie Initiative in partnership with Audubon Dakota. This cool restoration project aims to keep urban natural spaces thriving. If you're lucky during your visit, you might catch glimpses of squirrels darting between trees, various birds calling overhead, or even deer quietly making their way through the underbrush.

What You Can Do Here

One of the park's hidden sites is its rustic amphitheater stage with stone seating nestled into a grassy hillside. It's a charming spot for small gatherings or just sitting for a moment of quiet reflection.

Bird enthusiasts, grab your binoculars! This park has earned its reputation as a bird watching hotspot. The combination of river frontage and diverse habitats creates an ideal environment for spotting various feathered residents and seasonal visitors all year long.

As of 2024, disc golf players have been enjoying the newly installed disc golf course. While it's still evolving (no posted map or marked holes yet), the scattered baskets around the grounds have quickly become a favorite for local disc golfers looking for a new challenge.

Exploring the Trails

The park features a network of well-maintained mowed trails alongside dedicated biking/hiking paths that have recently been expanded. If you're short on time, the small loop trails near the parking lot offer a quick nature fix, while the smaller paths that venture deeper into the park reward those with more time to explore.

These trails transform with the seasons - from vibrant green corridors in summer to spectacular autumn color displays, and even winter wonderlands meant for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when the snow falls. It's a year-round retreat that somehow feels miles away from the city, despite being right in Fargo.

Practical Details

You'll discover a porta-potty available at the parking lot for when nature calls. The park offers several peaceful spots excellent for spreading out a blanket for a picnic or just sitting to enjoy a moment of tranquility - making it ideal for lunch breaks or leisurely weekend outings.

As you wander, keep an eye out for subtle reminders of the past. The park holds historical surprises in the form of partially visible old car parts and house foundations that have been gradually reclaimed by nature over time - little treasures that hint at stories from long ago.
