About the Location
A Piece of History in Broken Arrow
Nestled between Bixby and Broken Arrow, Haikey Creek Park spans 170 acres of green space in Tulsa County. It's one of those unique spots where you can actually stand in two places at once - a fun little geographical quirk that makes for a great photo op.
The park carries a meaningful name, honoring C. Ben Haikey, a preacher and member of the Union Band of Opotheleyahola Creek (now the Muscogee Nation). Back in 1901, Haikey began preaching under a simple brush arbor on his allotment - the very land that would eventually become this community gathering place.
Get Moving, Get Playing
If you're the active type, you'll find plenty to love here. The park features a mix of sports courts and fields for baseball and soccer, plus tennis courts and the newer addition of pickleball courts (which seem to be popping up everywhere these days).
The 2.3-mile walking trail winds through the park with a surface of crushed granite rather than concrete - your knees will thank you after a long walk or jog.
Disc golf enthusiasts, take note: the 18-hole course here is considered one of the best in the area. With cement tees and a challenging mix of wide-open fairways and tight, wooded holes, it offers something for players of all skill levels. The course is well-maintained, making it a favorite spot for local disc golfers.
Places to Gather and Play
Haikey Creek Park has five picnic pavilions equipped with electricity and water - ideal for family reunions or birthday celebrations. Beyond the pavilions, you can find scattered picnic tables and grills across the grounds for more impromptu outdoor meals.
If you're bringing the kids along, you've got options with two playgrounds. The main one in the center of the park tends to draw more families, while the playground at the south end offers a quieter alternative if your little ones get overwhelmed by crowds. Some equipment is thoughtfully shaded, and there's even an adaptive swing for children with disabilities.
When nature calls, you can find clean restroom facilities near the center of the park and by the softball fields. During busy times, portable toilets provide additional options.
Natural Beauty All Around
The landscape here strikes a nice balance - open green spaces for playing and picnicking, alongside wooded areas that preserve a natural feel. Large shade trees within the park offer welcome relief during Oklahoma's hot summer months and create peaceful, secluded spots to relax.
If you're into wildlife watching or nature photography, the trails offer good opportunities, especially during early morning or evening hours. On summer evenings, the park transforms with the magical glow of fireflies - a simple but memorable experience.
Extra Touches
Outdoor exercise equipment stations along the trails let you mix strength training with your cardio. If you're looking for something more low-key, there are horseshoe pits for a bit of traditional fun.
Bring your four-legged friends along - the park is dog-friendly, however all dogs need to stay on leash. Thoughtfully placed trash cans throughout make it easy to clean up after your pet and keep the grounds pristine for everyone.
The park welcomes visitors daily from 5 AM to 11 PM, with regular police patrols ensuring it remains a safe space for all. Whether you live nearby or you're just visiting Broken Arrow, Haikey Creek Park offers a refreshing green retreat from the everyday hustle.
