About the Location
A Piece of Portland History
Situated in southwest Portland, Albert Kelly Park spans a generous 12.09 acres of public green space. The city acquired this haven back in 1956, naming it after Albert Kelly - a Kentucky-born pioneer who settled in Oregon way back in 1841.
Get Your Game On
If you're looking to kick a ball around or hit a home run, this park offers space for both. The soccer field and baseball field offer plenty of room to play, making it a magnet for local sports enthusiasts. You'll often spot dedicated cyclists using the grounds for cyclocross practice too.
Little ones haven't been forgotten - a children's play area complete with monkey bars provides a great spot for kids to burn off energy while parents catch their breath.
Nature's Comeback Story
Perhaps the most special feature of Albert Kelly Park is Restoration Creek flowing right through its heart. Once hidden away in underground pipes, this Fanno Creek tributary has been "daylighted" in recent years - a small but meaningful environmental victory for the neighborhood.
Around the creek, the city has carefully recreated a riparian landscape, bringing back native plants and enhancing the natural ecosystem.
Under the Canopy
As you wander through the park, you can't miss the magnificent old Oregon oak trees standing sentinel throughout the grounds. These stately giants are among the last of their kind in the area, offering both shade and character to the landscape.
The mix of these impressive oaks and other native plants creates a peaceful setting while providing important habitat for local wildlife.
A Park of Many Moods
What makes Albert Kelly Park special is its diversity of spaces. Some areas open up into sunny, savanna-like clearings excellent for throwing a frisbee, while others invite you into densely wooded sections where you can escape the bustle of city life on a quiet trail.
Nestled within a residential neighborhood, the park is a natural gathering place where community happens naturally.
Good to Know
When nature calls, there's a porta-potty that's regularly maintained. While you're welcome to spread out a blanket for a picnic on the grass, you won't find permanent picnic tables here, so bring your own seating if needed.
And yes, your four-legged friends are welcome! The dog-friendly policy makes this a popular spot for neighborhood pups to stretch their legs and make new friends.
