About the Location

Park Overview

Tucked along the northern banks of the Allegheny and Ohio Rivers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, North Shore Riverfront Park offers a refreshing escape from city life while paradoxically putting you right in the middle of it. This 11.25-acre municipal park blends green spaces with public areas, offering a riverside setting where both locals and tourists come to relax.

Established in 2001 as part of a larger urban facelift that included the nearby sports stadiums, the park stretches for about a mile between the Kamin Science Center and the Three Sisters bridges. One of its most notable features? Those unobstructed views of Pittsburgh's skyline that make for excellent photo opportunities.

Design and Features

The park's clever multi-level design makes the most of its riverside location. At water's edge, you'll discover a riverwall and riverwalk that create a peaceful trail right alongside the flowing water.

Step up to the second level and you're greeted with generous open spaces of grass and native landscaping. The paths here run southwest, mirroring the river's natural flow. The Great Lawn is a sprawling three-acre space where you can spread out a blanket for a picnic or toss a frisbee.

The top level features a broad walkway known as the esplanade, which varies from sixteen to forty feet wide as it meanders through the park. The Water Steps is an interactive fountain that has become a local landmark. On hot summer days, you'll come across people of all ages dipping their toes in to cool off. The Market Street Pier extends the park experience right out over the water.

Recreational Activities

The well-maintained pathways around the park make it excellent for walking, running, biking, or roller blading. Many people come simply to take a leisurely stroll and soak in those gorgeous Pittsburgh views.

The abundant green spaces provide excellent spots for family picnics with the downtown skyline creating a stunning backdrop. If you're arriving by boat, you'll appreciate the convenient tie-ups along the riverfront. These spots also offer a unique perspective for watching river traffic or catching special events like fireworks displays.

Memorials and Significance

This park offers not simply pretty views and recreation spaces. It's also home to several important memorials honoring American heroes: the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

Nearby, you can also find a monument dedicated to Mr. Rogers, adding a touch of nostalgic significance that feels quintessentially Pittsburgh.

Location and Surroundings

The park's location is pretty much perfect - nestled between PNC Park (where the Pittsburgh Pirates play) and Heinz Field (home of the Pittsburgh Steelers). This prime position makes it a natural hub of activity, particularly when games are happening.

Hungry after your park explorations? You're in luck. The surrounding area boasts numerous bars and restaurants, including Jerome Bettis' establishment, all within easy walking distance. Several hotels also dot the vicinity, making this a convenient stop if you're visiting from out of town.

Maintenance

Keeping the park looking its best is a team effort involving several organizations, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Steelers, the City of Pittsburgh's public works department, and the Sports & Exhibition Authority of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County.
