About the Location
Lake Travis Access
Nestled right beside Mansfield Dam on Lake Travis in Austin, Texas, Mansfield Dam Park sprawls across 71 acres of prime lakefront real estate. If you're looking to launch your boat onto the glittering waters of Lake Travis, this is one of the best spots to do it.
The views here? Simply gorgeous. You can take in the expansive lake and the rolling Texas landscape from pretty much anywhere in this well-kept recreation area. The grounds are consistently clean and well-maintained; however, it's worth noting that water levels can change quite a bit depending on the season.
Water Activities
Lake Travis is your playground here, offering all the classic water fun you'd expect - swimming, fishing, and boating top the list. There's a designated swim cove where you can cool off on those scorching Texas summer days. Just a heads-up: you might want to bring water shoes since zebra mussels have made themselves at home along the shoreline.
If you're into exploring beneath the surface, you're in luck. There's an interesting scuba diving area with underwater dive platforms at various depths. Scuba enthusiasts particularly enjoy the underwater trail that connects some pretty cool submerged attractions - think sunken boats, an airplane, and interesting geological formations. It feels like discovering an underwater collection of curiosities.
Boating Facilities
A particularly useful feature of Mansfield Dam Park is its boat launch area with multiple lanes that stay accessible even when lake levels drop. This is especially valuable during those inevitable Texas drought periods when other access points around the lake might be high and dry.
There's a handy courtesy dock for loading and unloading your gear and passengers. Just plan accordingly if you're visiting during summer weekends or holidays - the boat ramp can get pretty busy with fellow lake-lovers.
Trails and Recreation
Need to stretch your legs? The park offers several paved multi-use trails winding through natural areas where you can walk, jog, or bike while taking in the local plants and wildlife. While not particularly long, these trails provide a nice escape into nature.
If you've got kids in tow, the modern playground is a definite highlight. It features a safety-focused rubber surface and equipment for children of various ages, including cool climbing walls and play structures that will keep the little ones entertained.
Picnic Facilities
Hungry after all that lake fun? Picnic tables and BBQ grills are scattered around the park, making it easy to enjoy a meal in the great outdoors. Many spots offer welcome shade from the Texas sun, so you can stay comfortable while you eat.
For bigger gatherings, the park offers both open areas and covered shelters - some of which you can reserve ahead of time for events. There are also individual pavilions throughout the grounds if you're looking for a more private dining experience.
Park Information
Mansfield Dam Park is a day-use area only - no overnight camping (with an exception for SCUBA diving groups who make reservations).
Entrance will cost you $5 per person, and it's cash only, so come prepared. The park opens at sunrise and closes at civil twilight daily. If you're a disabled veteran, you can enjoy the park for free. Dogs are welcome but need to stay on leash, and you should watch out for sharp objects on some of the trails if you're bringing your four-legged friend along.
