About the Location
A Park with History
Established in 1925, Harmon Field Park carries a meaningful legacy. The William E. Harmon Foundation of New York City funded this space originally as a recreational area for Fort Worth's African American community.
What began as a modest 5-acre plot has grown substantially to today's sprawling 97.5 acres. During the 1950s, the park briefly featured a golf course and recreation center specifically for African American residents. Sadly, freeway construction in the late '50s claimed portions of the park, making the golf course unusable.
Get Your Game On
Harmon Field offers several options for sports and recreation. The park features three full-size natural grass soccer fields that host matches throughout the year. Football fans aren't left out either - there's a dedicated football field waiting for action.
Hoop dreams happen on the park's basketball court, while little ones can burn off energy at the playground area. Parents and guardians can keep a watchful eye from the conveniently placed seating nearby.
Comfort and Convenience
Planning a picnic? You can find a small picnic area with tables positioned near the playground, and some grills if you're in the mood for outdoor cooking. The expansive grassy areas around the park also make perfect impromptu picnic spots.
When nature calls, portable toilets are available and typically kept stocked with toilet paper. The parking lots adjacent to the play and picnic areas provide convenient access.
The Lay of the Land
Harmon Field offers plenty of open, grassy spaces for whatever activity you have in mind. The park could use more trees for shade, especially on those hot Texas days. Weekends - particularly Saturdays - can get busy when soccer games are in full swing.
Some areas of the park offer peaceful corners with nice views, and the open layout gives four-legged friends plenty of room to run and explore.
Getting There
Finding Harmon Field is straightforward with its location along Martin Luther King Freeway. There's plenty of parking once you arrive.
While its origins were as a designated space for the African American community, today Harmon Field Park welcomes everyone from throughout Fort Worth.
