About the Location
Features and Amenities
Tucked away in McKinney is Bonnie Wenk Park, a 216-acre green space with diverse offerings. At the heart of the park sits a 5-acre fishing pond where you can cast a line and enjoy some peaceful angling - it's stocked with fish, so your chances of catching something are pretty good!
The park is crisscrossed with scenic walking trails that meander through woodlands and open fields. These paths connect to McKinney's larger trail network, making them ideal for your morning hiking and biking adventures. What we really appreciate is how many of the trails are shaded by mature trees - a true blessing during those scorching Texas summer days. The park is officially part of the National Recreation Trail system.
Recreation Areas
If you're bringing the kids along, you'll discover multiple play areas scattered around the park. There are several distinct playgrounds designed with different age groups in mind, from toddlers just finding their feet to older children seeking more adventure. The all-abilities playground allows children of all physical capabilities to play together. Kids especially seem to love the zipline designed just for them, along with various swings and climbing structures.
For those trying to stay fit, the outdoor fitness court offers equipment for workouts surrounded by nature. There are also multi-purpose fields well-suited for impromptu games, including dedicated soccer fields complete with netted goals.
Community Spaces
The park's outdoor amphitheater hosts community events and concerts, particularly in the summer months.
When it's time to refuel, numerous picnic areas dot the landscape, many offering shaded tables where you can enjoy a packed lunch. Some of these spots overlook the pond, giving you a peaceful backdrop while you eat.
Pet-Friendly Areas
The dedicated dog park within Bonnie Wenk allows your dogs to run off-leash. It thoughtfully includes separate sections for small and large dogs, preventing any intimidating encounters between different-sized pups. The park includes a doggie splash pad where dogs can cool off. The area is well-maintained with water fountains for thirsty pets and plenty of waste disposal stations.
Natural Environment
The natural landscape is what gives this park its character - abundant shade trees and open green spaces create a varied environment that changes with the seasons. In spring, you might be lucky enough to catch the cherry blossoms in bloom, adding splashes of color to the scenery. Keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife too - various birds make their home here, and if you're really fortunate, you might spot river otters playing in the creek areas.
Facilities
Clean restrooms are conveniently placed around the park, especially near the playgrounds (always a plus when you're out with kids). You'll find water fountains that include bottle-filling stations for staying hydrated on the go. Early birds take note - the park opens at 5AM daily, closing at midnight on Mondays and 11PM Tuesday through Sunday.
