About the Location
Sports & Recreation
Tucked away along Centerville Turnpike South in Chesapeake, Virginia lies a 90-acre recreational haven known as Centerville Park. This sprawling green space has become something of a local gathering spot where sports enthusiasts and families come to play, relax, and connect.
A major feature of the park is its collection of 11 multi-purpose fields, several featuring lighting for night practice and play. These well-maintained fields have become home turf for local soccer organizations like Chesapeake United and City Soccer leagues. The fields accommodate everything from casual kickarounds to competitive tournaments.
Amenities
While sports might be the main attraction, Centerville Park offers plenty more to enjoy. Parents with energetic little ones will appreciate the fenced playground area conveniently located near the restrooms. This castle-themed play space is designed for children between 4-12 years old and can accommodate up to 50 kids at once. The nooks and towers make it good for games of hide and seek.
When nature calls, you'll come across clean restroom facilities that typically stay open until the day's final game wraps up. During especially busy periods, portable toilets serve as backup options - not glamorous, but definitely practical.
Feeling hungry? Picnic tables are scattered throughout the grounds, offering pleasant spots to enjoy a packed lunch or snack. You're also welcome to bring a blanket and set up your own picnic anywhere on the open grass areas.
Getting to and around the park is straightforward thanks to paved parking lots with handicapped parking options. Just a heads up - if you're planning to visit during prime game days (especially Thursdays and Saturdays), arriving early is your best bet since parking fills up surprisingly fast.
Visitor Information
The park welcomes visitors daily from 7AM to 9PM. Beyond organized sports, the open layout provides plenty of space for flying kites, walking dogs (leashed, please!), or just letting kids burn off some energy.
A couple of practical notes: There's very little shade throughout the park, so bringing umbrellas for sunny days is a smart move. After rain, expect some muddy patches, particularly in certain parking areas - leave your fancy shoes at home.
Dog owners, your four-legged friends are welcome here! Many locals regularly bring their pets to enjoy the expansive grounds. Just be prepared to bring your own waste bags, as there aren't currently any dedicated dog waste stations available.
Future Development
Exciting things appear to be on the horizon for Centerville Park, although timing depends on available funding. Phase II development plans include adding a dog park, a Bicycle Motocross (BMX)/Skate Park, and various smaller amenities that will round out the recreational offerings.
Looking even further ahead, Phase III envisions a community center to serve local residents. Some park-goers have also suggested adding walking/jogging paths around the fields - a thoughtful idea that would give parents something active to do while watching their kids practice.
