About the Location
Natural Beauty
Set in Bellevue, Kelsey Creek Park unfolds across 150 acres of diverse Pacific Northwest landscape. From lush forests to open meadows and serene wetlands, there's a little bit of everything here. The park's namesake, Kelsey Creek, meanders through the grounds, creating a haven for wildlife - including salmon that return to spawn each year.
The wetlands attract both migratory birds passing through and year-round feathered residents, making this a sweet spot for birdwatching if you're into that. As you wander the boardwalks crossing over the creek, you'll be treated to the gentle soundtrack of flowing water against a backdrop of towering trees typical of our region.
Historic Charm
Perched on a hilltop overlooking shallow valleys on either sides stand two historic barns from the old Twin Valley Dairy operation. These aren't just any old barns - they're recognized in the State Heritage Barn Register and form the park's iconic centerpiece.
History buffs will also appreciate the preserved Fraser Cabin, one of Bellevue's oldest structures. It's like stepping back in time when you visit these well-maintained pieces of local history.
Farm Experience
One thing that makes Kelsey Creek truly unique is its working farm right in the middle of suburban Bellevue. Here you can get up close with sheep, goats, chickens, ponies, pigs, rabbits, and ducks going about their day. The animals are healthy and well-cared for, making this a wholesome learning experience for everyone.
If you time your visit right, you might even catch sight of a busy beehive with bees hard at work. The park calendar features some pretty cool annual events too - the Farm Fair in fall brings harvest-time fun, while the spring Sheep Shearing event shows you where wool begins its journey to becoming your favorite sweater.
Trails and Recreation
Feeling like stretching your legs? A network of trails winds through the forested areas and follows the creek's path. These connect to the broader Lake to Lake Trail system if you're up for a longer adventure. Some sections include stairs and elevation changes that add a bit of a workout to your walk.
For something more relaxed, try the popular 0.9-mile gravel loop that circles the farm and pastures. It's wide and well-maintained, meant for a casual stroll, jog, or bike ride. Just note that a few areas with stairs might be tricky if you're pushing a stroller.
You'll also find plenty of open grassy areas ideal for spreading out a blanket, reading a book, or just watching the clouds drift by.
Family-Friendly Features
Kids will make a beeline for the playground, which thoughtfully includes two separate areas - one designed for children 5-12 years old and another specially created for toddlers. The play structures feature multiple slides and climbing equipment, with a unique tractor-themed structure that's always a hit. The saucer swing and rope twirl merry-go-round add extra fun to the mix.
Planning a gathering? A spacious covered picnic shelter complete with tables and BBQ grills can be reserved through the City of Bellevue. If you're just dropping by, you can find additional picnic tables scattered within the park, including some shaded spots under the trees.
Clean restrooms with running water are conveniently located between the playground and farm areas. While there's plenty of parking available, the lot can fill up quickly during special events and sunny weekends, so arriving early is a good idea.
