About the Location
Natural Beach Paradise
Tucked away just off the coast of Everett, Washington, about 30 miles north of Seattle, Jetty Island is a fascinating blend of human ingenuity and natural beauty. This man-made island stretches two miles long and half a mile wide, covering roughly 1,800 acres. What began as a practical solution - dredged material from the Snohomish River formed into a riprap jetty in the late 19th century to create a protected harbor - has naturally evolved over time.
Sandy Shores
The island features the longest sandy beach in Puget Sound. In a region dominated by rocky shores, this expansive stretch of sand stands out as something different. The western shore has shallow, warm waters that make it a good swimming spot for families. Kids can splash around safely while parents relax on the shore.
The beach offers plenty to do - you can build sandcastles, sunbathe, or search for interesting items along the shoreline. What's surprising is how enjoyable the beach remains even on cooler days, and during summer, the water warms up to temperatures that might make you forget you're in the Pacific Northwest.
Wildlife Haven
Beyond recreation, Jetty Island is a crucial sanctuary for local wildlife. The island's patchwork of sandy beaches, grasslands, and salt marshes creates homes for over 45 bird species. You might spot marsh hawks circling overhead, cormorants drying their wings, majestic eagles, or flocks of dunlins darting along the shore.
The island quietly performs important ecological services too, offering young salmon a safe rest stop during their journeys and providing waterfowl with protected nesting grounds.
Visitor Information
Getting to this natural getaway requires a little planning. During summer (typically July 5 through Labor Day), a seasonal foot ferry connects the mainland to the island. Run as a partnership between the City of Everett and Port of Everett, these boats depart roughly every 15 minutes. Since seating is limited, it's wise to make reservations ahead of time.
Outside the summer season? No problem. Many locals simply paddle their way to the island via kayak, paddleboard, or personal boat. In fact, this self-propelled approach to visiting has become a year-round tradition for many outdoor enthusiasts.
Trails and Activities
Once you've arrived, a network of walking trails invites exploration through the island's diverse landscapes. These winding paths offer intimate glimpses into the island's unique ecosystem.
The western beach isn't just for swimming - it's become something of a mecca for wind sports. On breezy days, you'll likely see colorful kites from kitesurfers, windsurfers skimming across the water, and the newer foil surfing crowd getting their adrenaline fix. If you're more into tranquility, this same beach offers some of the most breathtaking sunset views in the region.
Facilities and Preparation
Jetty Island's charm lies partly in its undeveloped nature. You won't find concession stands, gift shops, or even permanent buildings here - just a seasonal floating restroom off the shore at the arrival pier.
You'll need to channel your inner scout and come prepared. Bring water, food, sun protection, and beach toys if you're visiting with kids. Many experienced visitors pack folding chairs and portable shade structures since natural shade is scarce on the beach. Think of it as a day trip with camping-style preparation.
Planning Your Visit
When packing, remember you'll need to carry everything about a quarter mile across the island. Those cute beach wagons and strollers that work well on boardwalks? They tend to struggle in the soft sand here.
During low tide, stick to walking along the stream channels to reach open water - this helps avoid the infamous sink-and-struggle through sand or mud. Also, keep in mind that the only restroom facilities are at the dock where you first arrive, which can feel like quite a trek when you're settled on the western beach.
Educational Opportunities
Jetty Island offers recreation and a living classroom. The City of Everett occasionally hosts guided nature walks and educational programs that reveal the secrets of the local ecosystem. These sessions transform a fun beach day into an enriching opportunity to learn about environmental stewardship and the delicate balance of coastal habitats.
