About the Location
A Breath of Fresh Design
Tucked between Seattle's Central Area and Capitol Hill, this 7,332 square-foot space has been transforming the neighborhood since early 2016. Right next to Seattle University, 12th Ave. Square Park isn't your typical patch of green - it's a thoughtful blend of community space and artistic innovation.
What makes this park stand out? For starters, it features a woonerf design (pronounced "voo-nerf" if you're curious). This Dutch-inspired concept basically means cars are guests here, not owners of the road. Pedestrians and cyclists get priority, with traffic-calming measures ensuring everyone can share the space safely.
Art in the Open Air
Look up and you'll spot "Cloud Veil" - a stunning sculptural canopy that hovers above a rounded "pillow" area. It's not just pretty to look at; this installation works with the wavy concrete paving beneath to create a cohesive artistic experience.
This wasn't just art for art's sake. Hewitt Architects and artist Ellen Sollod collaborated with the community to create something that truly reflects the neighborhood's character. The result? A space that feels both designed and organic.
Green by Design
The park incorporates rain gardens that do double duty - they manage urban runoff while adding natural elements to the space. It's a small but meaningful nod to sustainability in the heart of the city.
The clever layout stretches the feeling of openness across the entire block on E. James Court, with just a single east-bound lane for cars. This creates a surprising sense of spaciousness in what's actually a compact urban setting.
Community Living Room
Whether you're looking for a quiet moment or a place to meet friends, 12th Ave Square Park has options for both. Metal seating with tables and a long picnic bench provide plenty of options to relax, enjoy lunch, or catch up with neighbors.
Coming by bike? No problem. The park offers several bike stations where you can secure your ride while you unwind.
What's particularly special about this park is how it transformed a vacant lot into something useful and beautiful. It's not enormous, but its central location and thoughtful design make it an ideal spot for a quick escape from the urban hustle without actually leaving the city.
