About Crestwood Park in Birmingham
Crestwood Park is a 12.11-acre neighborhood park located on the north side of Crestwood Boulevard between 53rd and 55th Streets in the Crestwood community of Birmingham, Alabama. The park serves as a central recreational area for the surrounding neighborhoods, offering a variety of facilities for sports, leisure, and community gatherings.
The park features a fenced football-sized playing field with concrete bleachers and a field house on the north side. A jogging track encircles the field, providing a convenient space for runners and walkers to exercise. The park's athletic facilities are utilized not only for youth football but also by amateur soccer leagues such as the Liga Latinoamericana de Fútbol and the Magic City Lacrosse Club.
In addition to the main field, Crestwood Park offers tennis courts and pickleball courts, catering to racquet sport enthusiasts. The park also includes a swimming pool, which is a popular attraction during the warmer months. For younger visitors, there is a playground area where children can play and socialize.
The park provides amenities for community gatherings and outdoor relaxation, including a barbecue pit with a picnic shelter. The landscaped parking lot ensures convenient access for visitors. A drainage swale and steep slope separate the park from Crestwood Boulevard, with a footbridge opposite 54th Street South providing access.
Crestwood Park has undergone several improvements over the years. In 2009, the City of Birmingham allocated $2.4 million for park enhancements. Construction began in December 2011, and the renovated park reopened in September 2012. These improvements have helped maintain Crestwood Park as a vital community asset.
On May 12, 2007, the park's playing field was rededicated as the Claud Cotten III Memorial Field, honoring Crestwood North neighborhood activist Claud Cotten, who promoted organized sports for decades and served on the board of the Crestwood Colts.
