About One Pratt Park in Birmingham
One Pratt Park is a 6-acre urban park located in the North Pratt neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama. The park was developed as part of the recovery efforts following the devastating tornado outbreak in April 2011 that severely impacted the Pratt City community.
Completed in 2019, One Pratt Park serves as a centerpiece for community revitalization and a symbol of resilience for the area. The park features a significant grade change of 40 feet along its length, which has been utilized to create various landscaped areas and recreational spaces.
The park's design incorporates elements that pay homage to the area's history and natural features. A detailed magenta and white map of the area's former mining facilities, which were once the community's primary source of employment, is displayed in the park's gateway paving.
One Pratt Park is strategically situated adjacent to the Pratt City Library, which played a crucial role in community gatherings and workshops during the recovery process. The park's layout and amenities were designed based on input from these community conversations, ensuring that it meets the needs and desires of local residents.
The park's landscaping includes native plants and incorporates salvaged materials, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and local heritage. Site stormwater is collected and used to irrigate a shady streambed lined with recovered brick and granite blocks, showcasing innovative environmental management practices.
