About Helen Wood Park in Mobile
Helen Wood Park is located on the western shore of Mobile Bay in Mobile, Alabama, just north of the mouth of Dog River. The park offers scenic views of Mobile Bay and provides public access to the waterfront. It was officially opened and dedicated on August 3, 2006, following a generous land donation by Helen W. Wood to the State of Alabama, which then allowed the City of Mobile to develop and maintain the park.
The park features a boardwalk that overlooks Mobile Bay, providing visitors with opportunities for bird watching and enjoying the natural landscape. The site has seen significant coastal erosion over the years, which led to the implementation of shoreline stabilization projects. In 2011, The Nature Conservancy, working with partners, installed breakwater reefs to protect the shoreline and create habitat for marine life. These reefs, made of bagged oyster shells and reef balls, stretch for about 1,100 feet parallel to the shore.
Helen Wood Park serves as a popular spot for fishing and is one of the few public locations in the area where people can access Mobile Bay. The park is open seven days a week and closes at sundown, allowing visitors to enjoy daytime activities throughout the year.
