Louis Armstrong Park

Louis Armstrong Memorial Park is located on Madison Avenue in the heart of the Capitol Heights community in Montgomery, Alabama. The park sits on approximately 3 acres of land that was once the site of a prominent residence called Rockhaven, designed by architect Frank Lockwood and built in 1909 for Colonel James Steptoe Pinckard, founder of the Capitol Heights Development Company.

After Rockhaven burned down in the late 1960s, community members petitioned the City of Montgomery to transform the property into a public park. The park was subsequently named after Dr. Louis Armstrong, a long-time minister of Morningview Baptist Church, not to be confused with the famous jazz musician of the same name.

The park features mature trees and open green spaces, providing a serene environment for community gatherings and recreational activities. The original steps that once led to Rockhaven now serve as an entrance to the park, offering a tangible connection to the area's history.

Louis Armstrong Memorial Park exists today thanks to cooperation between the City of Montgomery and the Capitol Heights Civic Association. It serves as a neighborhood park where residents can enjoy outdoor activities, children can play, and community events are held.
