About Balto Seppala Park in Anchorage

Balto Seppala Park is an 18-acre public park located in the Turnagain area of Anchorage, Alaska. The park is named after Leonhard Seppala, a famous Nome gold rush miner and musher who played a crucial role in the 1925 serum run to Nome, and his lead dog Balto.

The park features a mix of recreational facilities and natural areas. It includes open grassy spaces suitable for various activities, as well as playground equipment designed for children aged 2-5 years old. The playground area is equipped with a modern, ADA-accessible surface, making it inclusive for users with disabilities.

One of the park's notable features is its sledding hill, which provides winter recreation opportunities for local residents. The park also contains two soccer fields, offering space for organized sports and casual play.

In 2014, the Anchorage Park Foundation and Parks & Recreation Department completed improvements to Balto Seppala Park. These enhancements included the installation of new playground equipment, the addition of accessible surfacing in the play area, and the construction of a picnic shelter. The soccer fields were also reseeded as part of this improvement project.

The park serves as a community gathering space, with amenities that cater to various age groups and interests. Its location in the Turnagain neighborhood makes it a convenient recreational spot for local residents.
