Freestone District Park is a sprawling 88-acre community park located in Gilbert, Arizona. Established in 1988 as the town's first major district park, it has since grown to become a central recreational hub for residents and visitors alike.
The park features two lake areas totaling 5 acres, which utilize reclaimed water and are stocked for fishing. These lakes are part of the Community Fishing Program, with fish stocking typically beginning in September or October each year. Visitors interested in fishing should check with the Arizona Game and Fish Department for specific stocking schedules, bag limits, and license regulations.
For sports enthusiasts, Freestone Park offers a variety of facilities including four lighted adult softball fields, two multi-use fields, four lighted full basketball courts, and four lighted tennis courts. The park also boasts two lighted sand volleyball courts equipped with water timers to cool the sand during hot days.
Families with children will find plenty to enjoy at Freestone Park. The park features three playground areas, including a tot lot, a wheelchair-accessible playground, and one designed for children aged 5-12 years. Additionally, the park is home to the Freestone Railroad, which includes a miniature train, an antique carousel, and a mini Ferris wheel, providing amusement rides for younger visitors.
For those seeking more active pursuits, the park includes a skate park and batting cages. The Freestone Recreation Center, located on the north side of the park, offers additional indoor recreational opportunities.
Picnickers will appreciate the park's three reservable ramadas, six shaded picnic tables, and seven open picnic tables with BBQ grills. The park also features an amphitheater, suitable for community events and performances.
Freestone District Park is open daily from 5:30 AM to 10:00 PM, with these hours remaining consistent even on holidays. The skate park operates from 5:30 AM to 9:00 PM daily, closing on the first Tuesday of every month for cleaning and maintenance.
