About Steele Indian School Park in Phoenix
Steele Indian School Park is a 72-acre urban park located in central Phoenix, Arizona at 300 E. Indian School Road. The park opened in 2001 on the site of the former Phoenix Indian School, which operated from 1891 to 1990.
The park's design pays homage to its Native American history while providing open green space for city residents. At its center is the Circle of Life, a 600-foot diameter circular walkway encompassing three historic buildings remaining from the Indian School. Twenty-four interpretive columns along the Circle of Life depict the school's history.
Key features include a 15-acre Entry Garden with a spiraling contemplative walkway, an outdoor amphitheater with seating for 1,500 people, and a 2.5-acre bird-shaped lake. The park also incorporates elements from the City Beautiful movement, aiming to provide refuge from urban living and nurture civic pride.
Historic buildings on site include Memorial Hall, built in 1922, which now hosts performances and community events. The Band Building (1931) and Dining Hall (1902) are slated for future renovation into a museum and Native American cultural center.
The park serves as a premiere special events venue for central Phoenix, hosting festivals, concerts and holiday celebrations throughout the year. Its expansive lawns, mature shade trees, and historic setting make it a popular spot for picnics, recreation, and enjoying nature within the city.
