About Arredondo Park in Tempe
Arredondo Park is a 4-acre public park located in Tempe, Arizona. Completed in 1972, the park is situated adjacent to Arredondo Elementary School. Both the park and the school were named in recognition of Alejandro (1897-1959) and Josefa (Gurrola) (1911-1991) Arredondo, honoring their dedication to education.
The park recently underwent improvements, including a full renovation of the playground with a baseball theme. The project also added accessible walkways into the park, a new picnic ramada north of the playground, and new lighting in the playground area. These enhancements were part of Tempe's Capital Improvement Program, which is investing over $60 million into the city's parks.
Arredondo Park offers a variety of recreational facilities for visitors. It features basketball courts, picnic tables, and a playground, providing opportunities for both active play and relaxation. The park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m., allowing residents to enjoy its amenities throughout the day and into the evening.
The park's development is closely tied to the Arredondo family's legacy in education. Alejandro and Josefa Arredondo raised eleven children, many of whom became local educators after graduating from Arizona State University. This connection to education is reflected in the park's proximity to Arredondo Elementary School, creating a space that serves both educational and recreational purposes for the community.
