About Silverlake Park in Tucson
Silverlake Park is a 51.1-acre metro park located along S. Kino Parkway in Tucson, Arizona. The park is situated in Ward 5 and is operated by the City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department. It offers a variety of recreational facilities and natural spaces for visitors to enjoy.
The park's history is intertwined with the area's past. It is named after Silver Lake, an artificially created lake that once existed south of Tucson. The lake was created by brothers Captain Alfred M. Rowlett and William M. Rowlett just prior to the Civil War by building an earthen dam on the Santa Cruz River. In its heyday, Silver Lake served as a popular recreation area for swimming, boating, and bathing. It also provided power for the Rowlett's flour mill, the first in the Tucson village area. However, due to increased flooding and changes in vegetation cover, the lake was repeatedly damaged by floods in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, eventually drying up.
Today, Silverlake Park continues to serve as a significant recreational space for the Tucson community. The park is open from 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily, providing ample time for visitors to enjoy its facilities. The park is undergoing improvements funded by the Tucson Delivers Proposition 407 bond, which will enhance its offerings and accessibility.
Silverlake Park is home to the Quincie Douglas Pool, a popular aquatic facility featuring a 144-foot long water slide, spray and splash features, a 25-yard competitive course, beach entry, a separate splash pad, and a shaded grassy area. The pool is typically open during the warmer months, closing for the winter season and reopening in April.
The park's location and diverse amenities make it a versatile space for various activities, from casual picnics to organized sports events. Its walking paths provide opportunities for exercise and leisurely strolls, while the open areas are suitable for both active recreation and relaxation.
