About Jácome Plaza in Tucson
Jácome Plaza is a public space located in downtown Tucson, Arizona. The plaza was constructed in 1989 during the building of the adjacent Joel D. Valdez Main Library, on the site of the former Jácome's Department Store. In 2003, it was officially designated as Jácome Plaza in recognition of the Jácome family's contributions to Tucson's history and commerce.
The plaza serves as a central gathering point for the community, hosting various events and festivals throughout the year. It features open areas suitable for public gatherings, as well as seating spaces where visitors can relax. The design of the plaza incorporates both hardscape and landscape elements, creating an urban oasis in the heart of the city.
In recent years, Jácome Plaza has undergone renovations to enhance its functionality and appeal. These improvements have included the addition of new walkways, improved lighting, and the creation of more circulation space. The redesign has encouraged increased daily use by downtown workers and visitors alike.
One notable feature of Jácome Plaza is the Jácome Memorial, dedicated on October 25, 2004. This memorial pays tribute to the Jácome family and their department store, which operated at this location from 1951 to 1980. The memorial provides historical context about the family's impact on Tucson's retail landscape and their support of local artists.
The plaza's central location makes it easily accessible, with the Sun Link Streetcar line nearby, providing convenient transportation options for visitors. Its proximity to the main library and other downtown attractions makes it an integral part of Tucson's urban fabric.
