Joaquin Murrieta Park

Joaquin Murrieta Park is a 49-acre metro park located on N. Silverbell Rd. in Tucson, Arizona. The park, which falls under Ward 1, has a rich history dating back to the late 1960s when it was established following community protests demanding recreational space for the underserved west side neighborhoods.

Named after Joaquin Murrieta, a Mexican miner during the California Gold Rush known to some as a Robin Hood-like figure, the park has been a central gathering place for the community for decades. It has served as home to Western Little League, senior sports teams, and countless weekend birthday parties.

Over the years, Joaquin Murrieta Park has faced challenges with aging infrastructure and facilities. In 2013, the City of Tucson hosted community meetings to collect feedback and develop a master plan for future improvements. Residents noted issues such as gopher holes, lack of parking, broken bathrooms, and a closed pool.

In recent years, the park has undergone significant renovations. As of March 2025, the park is closed for a major improvement project expected to last until late 2024. This renovation, funded by voter-approved bonds, aims to address many of the long-standing issues and modernize the park's facilities.

The park holds special significance for the local community. For instance, one of its fields, Field #7, has been renamed "Harry's Field" in memory of Harry Hoskinson, a young Western Little League player who tragically passed away at age 13.

Community involvement has been a key aspect of the park's development. Local organizations such as the Western Little League, Silvercroft Neighborhood Association, and various community partners have worked together to advocate for funding, improve sports fields, and beautify the park.
