About Boysen Park in Anaheim
Boysen Park is a 24.6-acre public space located in Anaheim, California. Named in honor of Rudy Boysen, the former Parks Superintendent and creator of the boysenberry, this park has been a local favorite since its establishment. It is affectionately known as "Airplane Park" due to its most distinctive feature: a U.S. Navy Cougar jet airplane that was used in the Korean War, which has been a prominent playground fixture since 1959.
The park's centerpiece, the jet airplane, is covered in cement to protect children and can be climbed upon, though it may be challenging for smaller children to enter and exit without assistance. This unique playground element adds a historical touch to the park's recreational offerings.
Boysen Park provides a variety of facilities for sports enthusiasts. It features baseball and softball fields, some of which are lighted for evening use. There are also areas designated for football and soccer, as well as tennis and volleyball courts.
For families and picnickers, the park offers a children's play area with various playground equipment, including swings, a rockwall, and spring riders. Picnic tables and BBQ facilities are available for those looking to enjoy outdoor meals.
Boysen Park is undergoing a significant refresh and expansion project. Plans include adding 2.5 acres to the park's area and introducing new features based on community input. Future amenities are set to include a skate park, basketball courts, a water play spray zone, a challenge course, fitness equipment, and a dog park, among others.
