About The Park at River Walk in Bakersfield
The Park at River Walk is a 32-acre public park located in Bakersfield, California. Opened in 2006, it was developed on an odd-shaped lot between the Kern River and Stockdale Highway that was donated to the city in 1995. The park features two interconnected lakes totaling 5 acres, which serve as groundwater recharge basins. Water flows from the Pioneer Canal into the upper 3-acre lake, then meanders through the park via a 1,000-foot cobblestone creek bed to a 2-acre lower lake. Any surplus water is returned to the adjacent Kern River, ensuring no water is wasted.
At the heart of the park sits the Spectrum Amphitheater (formerly known as the Bright House Amphitheater), an outdoor venue with a 3,000 square foot stage designed to appear as an island surrounded by water. The amphitheater can accommodate both large productions and intimate performances, with a capacity for up to 4,000 people.
The park's landscape incorporates native plant species and shade trees indigenous to the Kern River corridor, creating a natural and tranquil environment. Well-maintained walking paths wind through the park, offering visitors scenic routes for strolls, jogs, or bike rides. The park connects to the larger Kern River Bike Trail, making it a popular starting or endpoint for cyclists.
Fishing is a common activity at The Park at River Walk, particularly in the lower lake which is regularly stocked with fish. An annual Fishing Derby, organized by the Kern County Sheriff's Office since 2004, restocks the lake with various fish species and offers prizes to participants who catch tagged or large fish.
The Park at River Walk serves as a versatile community space, hosting concerts, movie screenings, and other events throughout the year. Its design, blending natural beauty with modern amenities, makes it a favored destination for Bakersfield residents seeking outdoor recreation and relaxation.
