About Central Park in Bakersfield
Central Park at Mill Creek is a 1.5-acre urban oasis located in the heart of downtown Bakersfield, California. The park runs along the Kern Island Canal between 19th and 21st Streets, serving as a focal point for the community and a catalyst for downtown revitalization.
Originally established in 1937, Central Park underwent a major renovation in 2009 as part of a larger redevelopment project. The redesign transformed the once-neglected industrial area into an inviting green space with enhanced recreational amenities. The renovation widened the canal to create a picturesque pond, which has become home to various waterfowl species.
A key feature of the park is the New Mill Creek covered bridge, an architectural highlight that connects the east and west sides of the canal. The bridge has become a popular backdrop for special events, weddings, and graduation photos. Concrete walkways meander through lush landscaping along the gently flowing water, providing tranquil paths for walking and biking.
The park incorporates elements that pay homage to Bakersfield's history, including a replica flour mill that serves as a testament to the area's industrial past. The redesign also prioritized accessibility, with ADA-compliant surfaces and play equipment in the children's playground area.
Central Park at Mill Creek serves as a community gathering space, hosting various events and providing a peaceful retreat for residents and visitors alike. Its central location makes it a connector between different parts of downtown Bakersfield, including cultural institutions like the Bakersfield Museum of Art and the Bakersfield Community House.
