About Carrillo Ranch Park in Carlsbad
Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park is a 27-acre public park located in Carlsbad, California. The park was once part of a 2,538-acre working ranch and vacation retreat owned by Leo Carrillo, a Hollywood actor known for his roles in nearly 100 films from 1927 to 1950 and his co-starring role in the television series "The Cisco Kid".
The park features a number of historic structures that have been preserved and restored by the City of Carlsbad. These include adobe buildings, a hacienda, reflecting pool, cabana, cantina, carriage house, tack shed, stable, barn, foundry, and equipment shed. The architecture reflects the Spanish Colonial and Mexican architectural styles popular in the early 20th century.
Visitors to the park can explore these historic buildings and learn about the life of Leo Carrillo and the history of early California ranching. The park offers self-guided walking tours, and a 13-minute introductory film is available at the Visitor Center Barn to provide an overview of the park's history.
One of the unique features of Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park is its population of peafowl. The park is home to numerous peacocks and peahens, descendants of six peafowl that Leo Carrillo brought to his ranch in 1937. These colorful birds roam freely throughout the grounds, adding to the park's picturesque atmosphere.
The park also includes nature trails for hiking and exploring the former ranch landscape. The Nicholas Flat Natural Preserve, part of the park, features a stock pond and offers visitors a chance to experience the natural beauty of the area.
Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park is not just a historical site but also an educational resource. The park offers school field trips and hosts Junior Ranger programs and campfire programs during the summer months.
