Pioneer Park

Pioneer Park, also known as Santa Fe Trail Historical Park, is located in El Monte, California. The park sits on the bank of the Rio Hondo River and holds significant historical importance for the region. It was designated as a California Historic Landmark (No. 975) on August 13, 1987, recognizing its role in California's early pioneer history.

The site was originally an encampment on the Old Spanish Trail, which was an extension of the trail from Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico. By the 1850s, El Monte began to be referred to as the "End of the Santa Fe Trail," though this claim is disputed by some. The area became notable as the first settlement in Southern California founded by citizens of the United States, with permanent settlements established by immigrants from Texas and Arkansas in the early 1850s.

In 1989, the City of El Monte built the Santa Fe Trail Historical Park near Valley Boulevard and Santa Anita Avenue to commemorate this history. The one-acre park featured two historic structures and a covered wagon. However, shortly after its opening, the park was closed.

As of 2023, the land has been cleared to begin construction on a new park. The El Monte Historical Museum now showcases the Santa Fe Trail and El Monte's historical importance to Southern California.

The City of El Monte is currently in the process of developing a new community park on the site. This future 0.85-acre community park is planned to offer a variety of amenities for all ages.
