About Woodward Park in Fresno
Woodward Park is a 300-acre regional park located in northeast Fresno, California, along the south bank of the San Joaquin River. Established in 1968, the park originated from a bequest by Ralph Woodward, a long-time Fresno resident who wanted to provide a regional park and bird sanctuary for the community.
The park offers a diverse landscape featuring lush greenery, blooming gardens, and serene lakes. It includes five miles of multipurpose trails that are part of the San Joaquin River Parkway's Lewis S. Eaton Trail system. These trails, which wind through the park, are popular for walking, jogging, and cycling.
Woodward Park is known for its beautiful Shinzen Japanese Garden, an authentic Japanese-style garden that provides a tranquil escape with its carefully landscaped grounds, koi ponds, and traditional features. The garden changes with the seasons, offering unique visual experiences throughout the year.
The park serves as a hub for various outdoor activities and community events. It houses a 2,500-seat amphitheater, which hosts concerts and performances. Woodward Park is also a favored location for cross-country running events, including high school and college championships.
