About Mason Regional Park in Irvine
William R. Mason Regional Park, commonly known as Mason Park, is a sprawling 345-acre recreational area located in southern Irvine, California. The park, which opened its first phase in 1973, is named after William R. Mason, who served as president of the Irvine Company from 1966 until his death in 1973 and was instrumental in the land donation for this park.
The park is divided into two distinct sections by Culver Drive. The eastern side features a 123-acre wilderness area with rugged terrain, including hills and a small creek. This section offers visitors a chance to explore nature through its hiking and biking trails. The western side of the park is more developed and typical of a traditional park setting, featuring large open grassy areas and an artificial lake.
At the heart of Mason Park lies a 9-acre lake, which has become a popular attraction since its completion in 1978. The lake is home to various waterfowl and is a favored spot for model boat enthusiasts. Surrounding the lake are numerous shade trees, providing ample areas for picnicking and relaxation.
The park offers a variety of recreational facilities to cater to different interests. There are multiple play structures scattered throughout the park, catering to children of various age groups. For sports enthusiasts, the park provides volleyball courts, softball backstops, and a physical fitness course. Paved pathways wind through the park, ideal for walking, jogging, or cycling.
Mason Park also serves as a venue for community events and gatherings. It features several picnic shelters that can be reserved for group activities, with one shelter capable of accommodating up to 500 people. The park hosts various events throughout the year, including outdoor concerts and movie nights during the summer months.
