About Mosswood Park in Oakland
Mosswood Park is a historic 11-acre public park located in Oakland, California. Established in 1909-1911, it is operated by the Oakland Parks and Recreation Department. The park is situated in the Mosswood neighborhood, bordered by West MacArthur Boulevard to the north, Broadway to the east, Webster Street to the west, and Interstate 580 to the south.
The park's history dates back to the 19th century when it was part of the estate of J. Mora Moss and his wife, Julia Wood. Their 1864 Carpenter Gothic style Victorian mansion, now known as the J. Mora Moss House, still stands at the center of the park and has been declared an Oakland Heritage Landmark. The city purchased the property in 1907 and officially opened it as a public park a few years later.
Mosswood Park features expansive green spaces with mature trees, including old-growth oaks, pines, and eucalyptus, providing a natural oasis in the urban landscape. The park's large, open lawn meadow is a popular spot for various activities and community events. The West Branch of Cemetery Creek, now called Glen Echo Creek, once ran through the site but currently exists as an underground culvert beneath the lawn.
The park has been a significant community hub throughout its history, hosting numerous cultural events, sports activities, and serving as a gathering place for diverse groups of Oakland residents. It has been home to pre-NBA basketball players and has witnessed decades of important cultural happenings.
In November 2016, the original Mosswood Recreation Center, built in 1953, was destroyed by a fire. Temporary facilities were installed to continue providing essential community services while plans for a new community center were developed. The City of Oakland, in collaboration with community stakeholders, has been working on a master plan for the park's future, including the design and construction of a new community center.
