Henry J. Kaiser Memorial Park

Henry J. Kaiser Memorial Park is located in the heart of downtown Oakland, California, specifically in the Uptown neighborhood. Completed in recent years, this urban park serves as both a civic space and a tribute to influential historical figures.

The centerpiece of the park is the "Remember Them: Champions for Humanity" monument, a large bronze sculpture designed by artist Mario Chiodo. This impressive artwork stands 31 feet high and 52 feet long, cast from 60,000 pounds of bronze. It depicts 25 culturally diverse role models who have made significant contributions to global peace, freedom, and human rights over the past 150 years.

The park includes several unique features designed for accessibility and education. Four walls for the visually impaired allow visitors to explore the monument's characters through touch. These walls feature bronze castings of each champion mounted on granite, along with their quotations in both Braille and large print.

While compact in size, occupying only about half a city block, the park provides a reflective space in Oakland's bustling downtown area. It serves as a gathering place for office workers on lunch breaks, local residents, and visitors interested in learning about civil rights leaders and humanitarians.
