About Hardy Park & Dog Park in Oakland

Hardy Dog Park is located near Claremont Avenue in Oakland, California. It is part of the Rockridge-Temescal Greenbelt, also known as "Frog Park," which spans 2.16 acres when combined with Redondo Park. Constructed in 1995, Hardy Dog Park was the first of its kind in Oakland, largely due to the advocacy of the Rockridge Community Planning Council.

The park features a fenced-in, off-leash dog area that provides a space for dogs to play and socialize. This enclosed dog run is situated underneath Highway 24, offering shade for the animals and allowing them to bark without disturbing the peace of the surrounding neighborhood. The surface of the dog area is primarily composed of gravel.

In addition to the dog play area, Hardy Park contains children's play equipment, making it a multi-use space for both pets and families. The park's location under the freeway provides a unique urban setting, blending recreational space with city infrastructure.

Due to changes in Oakland's dogs-in-parks law in April 2014, dogs are now allowed on-leash in the non-dog park portion of Hardy Park. This change has expanded the usable area for dog owners visiting the park with their pets.

Hardy Dog Park serves as an important community space in the Rockridge District of Oakland, offering residents and visitors alike a dedicated area for their dogs to exercise and play off-leash in a controlled environment.
