About Hart Park in Orange
Hart Park, located in Orange, California, is a 56-acre community park situated within the Old Towne Orange Historic District. The park land was originally acquired by the City of Orange in 1933 and established as the first "Orange City Park" in 1934 as part of the federal Works Progress Administration. Hart Park is designated in the National Register of Historic Places and is home to several historic structures and architectural elements.
The park features a diverse range of recreational facilities and natural spaces. It includes multiple sports fields, picnic areas, and open green spaces ideal for various activities. The Santiago Creek runs through the park, adding a natural water feature to the landscape. A notable aspect of Hart Park is its unique parking arrangement, with the main lot situated in the paved Santiago Creek bed, which stands about 6-7 feet below the park level.
Hart Park serves as a community hub, hosting various events throughout the year. During the summer months, the City of Orange organizes free concerts at the park's bandshell, which was built in 1938 and was the second project constructed in the park. The park's layout and amenities make it suitable for family gatherings, birthday celebrations, and community events.
Accessibility is enhanced by the Santiago Creek Bike Trail, which runs through Hart Park and connects to other trails in the area, allowing cyclists to travel from Riverside to the beach. This integration with the broader trail system makes Hart Park a key point in the local recreational infrastructure.
As of 2025, Hart Park is set to undergo further improvements. The City of Orange received $2 million for the construction of new pickleball facilities on the south side of the park, which will include 10 pickleball courts, spectator seating, and various amenities. Additionally, an outdoor fitness circuit and new walkways are planned, along with landscaping enhancements for all park visitors to enjoy.
